Non-bail­able War­rant Is­sued Against Mallya

The spe­cial CBI court in Mum­bai is­sued a non-bail­able war­rant against be­lea­guered liquor baron Vi­jay Mallya af­ter the CBI moved ex­tra­di­tion plea against him, re­ports The agency is ex­pected to ap­proach the MEA on Wed­nes­day re­gard­ing the same. This is the Modi gov­ern­ment’s sin­gle big­gest move to bring Mallya back. Last year, the UK gov­ern­ment had re­jected the re­quest made by the In­dian gov­ern­ment, cit­ing le­gal com­pli­ca­tions, af­ter which fi­nance min­is­ter Arun Jait­ley had said ex­tra­di­tion pro­ceed­ings will start once CBI files a chargesheet. An af­fi­davit was sub­mit­ted by CBI in court on Tues­day, which claims that Mallya is a wanted crim­i­nal, and hence, should be brought back to In­dia. The af­fi­davit will be sub­mit­ted to the for­eign min­istry, which will then ap­proach its UK coun­ter­parts for ex­tra­di­tion.
