Sasi Camp Sure Palani Will Win Floor Test Today
Palaniswami claims support of 124 MLAs while the rival O Panneerselvam faction claims support of 11 MLAs
Chennai: Imprisoned AIADMK general secretary VK Sasikala’s supporters are confident that the floor test to be held when the assembly convenes on Saturday will be a breeze for the newly inducted Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, who has been asked by the governor to seek the confidence of the House.
Palaniswami claims the support of 124 MLAs (crossing the half-way mark of 117 seats) while the rival O Panneerselvam faction claimed the support of 11 MLAs as on Friday evening. But supporters of Panneerselvam insisted that the real floor test will happen when the MLAs who vote for Palaniswami return to their assembly constituency and meet their people. Members of the Panneerselvam camp met the assembly speaker P Dhanapal on Friday morning seeking among other things that the floor test be done through a secret ballot in the assembly. This they believed would allow MLAs to vote “conscientiously, without inhibition or fear”, according to a representative of the Panneerselvam camp.
Alittle while later, Panneerselvam released a statement appealing to the state police department to act in an unbiased manner as they did under former chief minister J Jayalalithaa.
He said in his statement, “People across the state who opposed the rule of one family in Tamil Nadu were in a peaceful manner expressing their displeasure in the present government and against their MLAs.” Panneerselvam also said that he was informed that the police had arrested members of the public who were protesting against their MLAs for taking sides with the Sasikala camp. “I appeal to the police to release these innocent people immediately,” he said. The MLAs supporting Sasikala, meanwhile, continued to camp in the resort.
