Lucknow: Gayatri Prajapati and AmanmaniTripathi,twomuch-talked about politicians facing varied fortunes inside the Samajwadi Party, are now facing serious legal troubles and will bank on sympathy and their local clout to win their electoral battles.
Amanmani Tripathi, the son of jailed former minister Amarmani Tripathi, is behind bars too and now faces a CBI charge-sheet accusing him of murdering his wife. Minister Gayatri Prajapati faces imminent arrest in a gang rape case lodged against him after the Supreme Court’s intervention. While Akhilesh Yadav had cancelledAmanmani’sticketandheis contesting as an independent from his Maharajganj’sNautanwaseat,theCM has blown hot and cold on Prajapati - first dismissing him from Cabinet beforere-inductinghimandgivinghima ticket from Amethi. The ticket to Prajapati by the SP is despite its alliance partner Congress also fielding its candidate from Amethi in Congress leader Sanjay Sinh’s wife Amita Sinh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi targeted Prajapati on Sunday, saying Akhilesh began his campaign by asking votes for Prajapati. “Everyone in Nautanwa knows Amanmani has been framed. Log jante hain ki agar vikaas chahiye, sirf Tripathis hi kar sakte hain (People know that only the Tripathis can do development here). He has sympathy here. My father Amarmani Tripathi as 4-time MLA here till 2012 did maximum work here,” Amanmani’s sister Tanushree told ET. The 33-year-old post graduate f r o m Unive r s i t y o f London has taken reins of her brother’s campaign in Nautanwa as Amanmani has been denied bail. CBI filed a chargesheet against him on Saturday after he came out of jail on parole on February 13 to file his nomination. “It is a deeprooted conspiracy. CBI is a part of it — all to spoil Amanmani’s c a mpaign, ” s ay s Ta nus h r e e. Amanmani lost the seat in 2012 to Congress candidate Kaushal Kishor by 8,000 votes. Kishor is contesting from SP now.
An SP leader said cancelling tickets of the likes of Amanmani and Atiq Ahmed seems to be proving right in hindsightwithboththesepersonsnow facing jail time. Atiq, who chose not to contest after his ticket was cancelled by Akhilesh Yadav from Kanpur Cantonment, has been jailed in a recent assault case and court has denied him bail in light of his long criminal history. “The case against Prajapati is, however, motivated and is dating back three years. It was probed by the UP CB-CID wing and nothing was found in it. Now, police has lodged an FIR after Supreme Court’s orders,” an SP leader said.
