Apro­pos ‘Mar­kets, not Co­er­cion, will Cure Bank NPAs’ (Feb 22). Banks have sys­tems to an­a­lyse loan pro­pos­als and to dis­burse loans. As long as bank ex­ec­u­tives fol­low the sys­tem, they need not be ap­pre­hen­sive that ac­tion will be taken against them if the loan turns sticky. If there is a de­vi­a­tion from pro­ce­dures, they should ex­plain the rea­sons to the sat­is­fac­tion of the in­ves­tiga­tive agency. The prob­lem arises when bank ex­ec­u­tives can­not give a cred­i­ble ex­pla­na­tion.
