Varanasi: Brajesh Singh is in jail, so is his bete noire Mukhtar Ansari and the latter’s supposed hit man Munna Bajrangi. But that doesn’t matter in the Uttar Pradesh elections. The men described as the three biggest dons of Purvanchal (eastern Uttar Pradesh) loom large on the landscape, each of them closely engaged in a battle for political office, and more. Brajesh Singh, who made his debut as an MLC from Varanasi in 2016, is pulling out all the stops to ensure his nephew Sushil Singh wins the Chandauli regions' Sayedraja seat for the BJP. The uncle had failed to win this seat in 2012 polls by a mere 2,000 votes. Sushil Singh recently said his uncle, who’s lodged in a Varanasi jail, was also effectively with the BJP, but told ET on Sunday that he remains an independent MLC.
