Varanasi: Bra­jesh Singh is in jail, so is his bete noire Mukhtar An­sari and the lat­ter’s sup­posed hit man Munna Ba­jrangi. But that doesn’t mat­ter in the Ut­tar Pradesh elec­tions. The men de­scribed as the three big­gest dons of Pur­van­chal (east­ern Ut­tar Pradesh) loom large on the land­scape, each of them closely en­gaged in a bat­tle for po­lit­i­cal of­fice, and more. Bra­jesh Singh, who made his de­but as an MLC from Varanasi in 2016, is pulling out all the stops to en­sure his nephew Sushil Singh wins the Chan­dauli re­gions' Sayedraja seat for the BJP. The un­cle had failed to win this seat in 2012 polls by a mere 2,000 votes. Sushil Singh re­cently said his un­cle, who’s lodged in a Varanasi jail, was also ef­fec­tively with the BJP, but told ET on Sun­day that he re­mains an in­de­pen­dent MLC.
