Rahul Vis­its Flood-af­fected Lakhim­pur in As­sam

Guwa­hati: Congress vi­cepres­i­dent Rahul Gandhi on Thurs­day vis­ited the flood-af­fected Lakhim­pur district in As­sam.

He as­sured that the Congress will raise the mat­ter of As­sam floods in Par­lia­ment and en­sure that the vic­tims get com­pen­sated. Rahul trav­elled in a boat to Am­tola. The area had wit­nessed breach in em­bank­ment.

Rahul said, “There are floods here. I thought I must come and hear about the pain of the peo­ple.We will raise the mat­ter of As­sam flood in Par­lia­ment.” Rahul later went to Silchar to take part in the last rites of for­mer Union min­is­ter San­tosh Mo­han Dev, who passed away on Wed­nes­day. On Tues­day, PM Naren­dra Modi had vis­ited As­sam and an­nounced a .₹ 2,000-crore pack­age for the re­cur­ring flood prob­lem in four north­east­ern states of As­sam, Ma­nipur, Na­ga­land and Arunachal Pradesh. Be­sides an­nounc­ing the con­sti­tu­tion of a high-level com­mit­tee to study the prob­lems of flood in the re­gion, Modi had an­nounced .₹ 250 c rore for As­sam.

But had Congress said .₹ 2,000 crore is too lit­tle for the dev­as­tat­ing flood. For­mer CM Tarun Go­goi sought .₹ 50,000-crore pack­age for a per­ma­nent so­lu­tion of flood and ero­sion prob­lems. The lat­est wave of flood in the state has af­fected over 25 lakh peo­ple.At least 82 per­sons have died and stand­ing crop over 2.09 lakh hectares has been dam­aged.
