New Del h i : Prime Minister Narendra sent three senior government doctors to Gorakhpur, where 60 children died in five days in BRD Medical College Hospital, and approved a ₹ 85-cr regional research centre to be established in the eastern Uttar Pradesh city.

UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath and Union health minister JP Nadda rushed to Gorakhpur on Sunday on the PM’s insistence after visits of junior ministers failed to quell anger over the deaths.

“The PM wants all information and the status of the fight against encephalitis. A team of three doctors is camping here from Delhi. The aspect of oxygen failure will be probed by a committee headed by the UP chief secretary. We want concrete reasons for the deaths to come to light – if the reason is lack of oxygen or any other negligence, we will take the strictest possible action,” Adityanath said in the presence of Nadda in Gorakhpur at a press conference.

Nadda said he had approved a regionalresearchcentreforGorakhpur to come up with a protocol to fight AES(AcuteEncephalitisSyndrome). The CM said he had been asking the Centre for the same. “Three doctors from Delhi, the head of Safdarjung Hospital, the head of Lady Hardinge Hospital and deputy commissioner o f Nat i o n a l I mmunis a t i o n Programme are camping here. They are checking on every patient,” Nadda said.

Kafeel Ahmed, nodal officer for departmentof paediatricsandhailedasa heroforsavinglives, hasbeenremoved for carrying out private practice. “No one can be more pained by such deaths,” Adityanath said, recalling how he had been fighting encephalitis since 1995-1996 and had seen thousands of children die due to AES.

“If any negligence is found, we will take action which will set an example for the future,” says CM

“UPA’s health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad came to BRD Hospital once and said he could not do anything as it was a state matter. The feelings of the Congress are dead and they are now only sprinkling salt on our wounds.`
