Cop Killed in Clashes With GJM Loyalists
Kolkata: After a two-week lull that followed the withdrawal of the104-day strike in Darjeeling, violence returned to the town on Friday when a subinspector was killed and three policemen were injured in firing between security forces and the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha led by Bimal Gurung.
Security forces, acting on a tip-off that Gurung was near his residence at Patlebas, were moving towards his operational headquarters when they were attacked by his armed cadres, said Anuj Sharma, ADG, law and order. “We had specific information that Gurung had been camping there. We knew that they had stocked a huge cache of arms but we did not expect such heavy firing,” he said.
