16 New­borns Dead at Jorhat Med­i­cal Col­lege

Guwa­hati: As­sam gov­ern­ment has rushed a med­i­cal team to Jorhat Med­i­cal Col­lege and Hos­pi­tal fol­low­ing death of 16 new­borns. Health min­is­ter Hi­manta Biswa Sarma said a team of ex­perts in­clud­ing di­rec­tor of med­i­cal ed­u­ca­tion from Guwa­hati Med­i­cal Col­lege and Hos­pi­tal will reach Jorhat to look into the deaths. Dr Pran­ab­jit Biswanath, head of pae­di­atrics at the hos­pi­tal, said that be­tween Novem­ber1and Novem­ber 6, 15 new­borns have died in the hos­pi­tal due to var­i­ous com­pli­ca­tions. “Some moth­ers just be­fore de­liv­ery while some chil­dren were born with poor health con­di­tion.” On Fri­day, an­other new­born died. Dr Biswanath said 84 new­borns were ad­mit­ted in the hos­pi­tal whereas the ca­pac­ity was for 40. — Bikash Singh
