Xiaomi, Fox­conn plan more In­dia units

SMART­PHONE maker Xiaomi is in talks with a few states to set up ad­di­tional man­u­fac­tur­ing fa­cil­i­ties in as­so­ci­a­tion with Fox­conn Tech­nol­ogy Group, re­ports fe Bureau in Hy­der­abad. The com­pany cur­rently has a man­u­fac­tur­ing fa­cil­ity in Sri City, an in­dus­trial park in the Chit­toor district of Andhra Pradesh. Fox­conn is also in talks with few states to build 10-12 fac­to­ries over the next five years with an in­vest­ment of $2 bil­lion.

Hy­der­abad, Aug 12: Chi­nese smart­phone maker Xiaomi is in talks with a few state gov­ern­ments to set up ad­di­tional man­u­fac­tur­ing fa­cil­i­ties in as­so­ci­a­tion with Fox­conn Tech­nol­ogy Group. The com­pany cur­rently has a man­u­fac­tur­ing fa­cil­ity in Sri City, an in­dus­trial park in the Chit­toor district of Andhra Pradesh.

The Chi­nese com­pany, which started op­er­a­tions in In­dia two years back, man­u­fac­tures de­vices in China and Brazil. In­ci­den­tally, Fox­conn, con­sid­ered to be world's largest con­tract man­u­fac­turer for Ap­ple prod­ucts, is also in talks with few state gov­ern­ments to build 10-12 fac­to­ries over the next five years with an in­vest­ment of $2 bil­lion as part of the Modi govern­ment’s Make in In­dia ini­tia­tive.

“We are look­ing to ex­pand our cur­rent man­u­fac­tur­ing ca­pac­ity at Andhra Pradesh fa­cil­ity. We only de­sign phones and man­u­fac­ture throughour­part­nerFox­conn. We will be adding more lines and more ca­pac­ity to the same plant and once we ex­haust it, we will be adding one or two morefac­to­rieswhich­will­help in our ex­pan­sion plans for the do­mes­tic mar­ket,” Manu Jain, Xiaomi In­dia Head, said.

For Fox­conn Tech­nol­ogy Group, it is its sec­ond leg of man­u­fac­tur­ing in In­dia by pro­duc­ing Xiaomi smart­phones in Andhra Pradesh. It pro­duces about 10,000 phones a day for Xiaomi.

Fur­ther, Xiaomi is look­ing to in­cu­bate mo­bile start-up tech­nol­ogy com­pa­nies in In­dia. “We are look­ing to in­cu­bate or have strate­gic part­ner­ships with mo­bile tech­nol­ogy start-up com­pa­nies,” he said.
