In April, the BJP sprung a surprise by picking Keshav Prasad Maurya, firsttime MP from Phulpur in Allahabad, as president of the party unit in Uttar Pradesh, a state which is headed to polls in 2017 and where the party has high stakes. Maurya, 46, an old RSS hand, is known to be vocal on issues such as cow protection and nationalism.
