In April, the BJP sprung a sur­prise by pick­ing Ke­shav Prasad Mau­rya, first­time MP from Phulpur in Allahabad, as pres­i­dent of the party unit in Ut­tar Pradesh, a state which is headed to polls in 2017 and where the party has high stakes. Mau­rya, 46, an old RSS hand, is known to be vo­cal on is­sues such as cow pro­tec­tion and na­tion­al­ism. With the party not declar­ing a CM can­di­date, Mau­rya will have to play caste com­bi­na­tions care­fully as he man­ages the elec­tion cam­paign
