Education is the great leveller

-

I read Bharat Jhunjunwala's article, ‘Economic equality first, Mr Prime Minister’ (August 20). Economic inequality is nothing new to India. Poor people were ruled by rich classes and religious leaders in India in past. It is not India's poor, but the so-called rich and priestly class, which sold itself to foreign rulers. Today we face inequality in every field, from education to even getting the job of an office assistant. Why? The only answer is to give the same education to all students, whether they come from slums or skyscrapers. If at all equality comes, it will come through education. As of today, governments at the centre and the states are run by the sons and daughters of former rulers or top government officials of the past. They are ruling the vast majority of poor Indians in the name of democracy. In Parliament and state assemblies, we find dynastic rule. Why are cricketers and filmstars nominated to the Rajya Sabha? This practice must be stopped.
