Jawan’s suicide: Abetment case against journo

The Nashik police have filed a case against a journalist and a retired army officer for allegedly abetting the high profile suicide of Artillery Gunner Roy Matthew.

The decomposed body of Artillery Gunner DS Roy Matthews (33) was found on 2 March.

Roy was working as a ‘buddy’ to a colonel in School of Artillery.

Roy’s family in Kollam, Kerala had filed a complaint that he was missing. Later his decomposed body was found near the Army camp at Nasik. The police have found his diary written in Malayalam and his mobile phone at the suicide site.

Deolali Camp police senior police inspector V Lokare said that on Monday cases were registered against journalist Poonam Agrawal and a retired Army official Deepchand under Sections 306, 451, 500 and 34 of IPC.

Police sources said that, Poonam Agrawal helped by Deepchand allegedly conducted a sting operation on Roy and other jawans in the Haigline area of the Military.

They allegedly used their video cameras in a restricted area without permission. The journalist, who works for quint news also allegedly posted the video and caused defamation to the Army establishm­ent.

The police were investigat­ing whether the deceased was in a video which went viral on social media recently.

Reports said that a viral video about the ‘buddy’ system in the army allegedly stated that jawans had to take dogs for walk, do the laundry, bring children from school and other non-military work. The deceased was allegedly in the video, reports said.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Defence Dr Subhash Bhamre had stated in Nashik that, an inquiry by a high level officer would be conducted along with the home department.
