Five drown in Balganga river

Five, including three kids, were drowned while they were swimming in a river in Khalapur on Wednesday morning.

The incident happened at the banks of Balganga River near Shiravali village in Khalapur of Raigad district.

The deceased are identified as Shubham Milind Waknis (8), Tushar Ganesh Arate (7), Minakshi Waknis (31), Gauri Arate (35) and Tejaswini Arate (11).

According to police, two women along with their three kids went to the banks of Balganga river at 8 am in the morning to wash the clothes. While the women were washing, the kids went to swim in the river that has not much water. But they slipped and swept away. The women immediatel­y went to save the kids. However, they couldn’t save kids and got drowned as well.

ST Borate, police inspector, Khalapur, said, “Our police reached the spot within five minutes of getting the call. However, all five were already drowned and all we have to do was to take their bodies out of the water.”
