MUMBAI: The second tunnel boring machine (TBM) for construction of the Metro III (Colaba-BandraSEEPZ) line has arrived. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) will lower the TBM in mid-October at the launching shaft at Azad Maidan, which is part of the package 2.

The TBM, procured from Australian major Terratech Private Ltd, from its manufacturing facility in Guangzhou at China, weighs 817 tonnes with a diameter of 6.68 metres.

Developed to receive two types of removal equipment, a belt conveyor and a screw conveyor, this hard rock type device will be used to construct tunnels with circular cross section. The different part of machines will be assembled in a period of 45 days.

“This TBM will allow soft, wet, hard or unstable ground to be tunnelled with speed and safe construction,” said Ashwini Bhide, Managing Director of MMRC. “For safe construction and reducing the impact on the surrounding environments, we are using a technology that will be applied by implementing a real-time monitoring and safety evaluation system to track the process during excavation.”

The machine will be used to construct a 4 km tunnel between CST station up to Mumbai Central metro station including Kalbadevi, Girgaon and Grant road stations. –Staff Reporter
