Ch­hota Ra­jan’s for­mer aide DK Rao ar­rested over ex­tor­tion charges

Gang­ster Ravi Mallesh Bora alias DK Rao, a for­mer aide of Ch­hota Ra­jan, was ar­rested on Thurs­day late night by Mum­bai crime branch for al­legedly seek­ing to ex­tort Rs 50 lakhs from a builder.

A First In­for­ma­tion Re­port (FIR) was reg­is­tered against Rao by a builder at An­top Hill po­lice sta­tion. Ac­cord­ing to the com­plainant, the project in An­top Hill was on since 2013 and the builder had re­ceived ap­proval. Later the work was stopped on Rao’s in­struc­tions. The com­plainant was in­formed that no fur­ther work would be car­ried on with­out Rao’s per­mis­sion. Rao then de­manded Rs 50 lakhs from the builder.

Ac­cord­ing to Dilip Sawant, Deputy Com­mis­sioner of Po­lice, Crime Branch, “Rao was run­ning an ex­tor­tion racket tar­get­ting builders. In June, Rao called the com­plainant and threat­ened him. An ex­tor­tion de­mand for Rs. 50 lakhs was then made. The builder was asked to de­liver the money at Dhar­avi.”

“More com­plaints will be reg­is­tered in the com­ing days and more ac­cused will be ar­rested soon. We have urged more com­plainants to come for­ward,” added Sawant.

Rao has been re­manded to po­lice cus­tody till Oc­to­ber 18.

Rao was lodged in Taloja jail for a year and re­leased in July 2016. Rao is known to be an old-time Ch­hota Ra­jan loy­al­ist, no­to­ri­ous for his role in plan­ning mur­ders of the ac­cused in the 1993 bomb blasts at Ra­jan’s be­hest, af­ter the lat­ter sev­ered ties with Da­wood Ibrahim and his brother Iqbal Kaskar.
