The Mumbai Metropolitan and Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) is all set to float tenders for metro six and metro nine corridors in June, which would help in enhancing east-west connectivity.

The metro 6 corridor will connect Swami Samarth Nagar- Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road to SEEPZ. The corridor will be akin to the one that connects Ghatkopar to Versova. It will be approximately 14 km in length.

The metro 9 corridor will connect Dahisar east to Mira Bhayander.

This will help in connecting the eastern and western suburbs. Currently, Mumbai Metro one, which connects Ghatkopar to Versova, caters to more than three lakh passengers daily. “At present, we have only north to west connectivity. Once the metro 6 corridor is open for public use, it would offer east-west connectivity which will benefit lakhs of passengers on a daily basis,” said Pravin Darade, Additional Commissioner, MMRDA.

The daily estimated ridership for metro 6 corridor is at least 7.7 lakh passengers and the daily ridership for metro 9 corridor is estimated at 4.4 lakh passengers.

The total length of the metro 9 corridor which will connect Dahisar (east) to Mira-Bhayander and Andheri (east) to Airport would be at least 13. 5 km.

“The metro 9 corridor will help in connecting Mumbai. This corridor will also be connected to metro 7 corridor (Dahisar east to Andheri east) at Dahisar metro station. It will further help in offering connectivity to Mumbai International Airport and metro 3 corridor (Colaba-BandraSEEPZ),” added Darade.

Activist Anil Galgali said that once the metro 6 corridor is ready for public use, the commuters will have a proper mode of transport and can conveniently travel without congestion.

In April, MMRDA had invited tenders to appoint consultants for the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan metro corridor. The winning bidder would design and construct the entire 24-km corridor, 17 stations, car depot, auxiliary structures and staff quarters within 30 months from the date of the award.

This 24-km long Metro-5 corridor is expected to carry around 2.29 lakh commuters daily in 2021. The entire system would be designed for six coach trains and will have at least 17 metro stations.

Currently, the city is witnessing construction of metro 2A (Between Dahisar and DN Nagar) and metro 7 corridor (Dahisar east to Andheri east).
