Himachal Pradesh will go to the polls on November 9 this year to elect its new 68-member State Assembly, with the counting of votes scheduled to take place on December 18, the Election Commission announced on Thursday. The process for electing the new assembly in Gujarat, too, will be completed by December 18.

AK Joti, Chief Election Commissioner, said Himachal will see a single-day poll. The Commission, however, did not announce the election schedule in Gujarat, with Joti saying that it will be announced soon.

The Commission said the decision to count the votes in Himachal in December after polling in Gujarat was over has been taken so that the outcome of the polls in one State does not affect polling trends in another State.

Electronic Voting Machines and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) will be used in all polling stations in Himachal.

Each candidate contesting the election will be allowed to spend a maximum of ₹ 28 lakh on the election and will have to furnish the accounts of expenditure within 30 days of the declaration of results, the Commission announced.

Himachal will see 7,479 polling stations being set up for over 49 lakh voters to cast their votes. The fact that some regions in Himachal, especially Lahaul and Spiti, become snow-bound influenced the Commission’s decision in finalising the polling schedule for the State.
