Ce­ment de­mand weak, prices up

Ce­ment de­mand re­mained weak even as prices con­tin­ued to re­main firm with com­pa­nies pass­ing on ris­ing costs to con­sumers. Ce­ment pro­duc­tion in the first five months of the fis­cal fell 3.2 per cent to 117 mil­lion tonnes. A per­va­sive mon­soon af­fected de­mand in Au­gust and Septem­ber. Among key raw ma­te­ri­als, pet coke prices rose 12-15 per cent in the sec­ond quar­ter. While power and fuel costs regis­tered a sub­stan­tial rise, diesel prices moved up 6 per cent, im­pact­ing freight ex­penses. p5
