24x7 power sup­ply to be­come legally bind­ing

The gov­ern­ment will also make it legally bind­ing for a power dis­tri­bu­tion com­pany to sup­ply 24x7 un­in­ter­rupted power sup­ply.

RK Singh, Min­is­ter of State (In­de­pen­dent Charge) for Power and Re­new­able En­ergy, said, “There can be no jus­ti­fi­ca­tion to pass on the bur­den of our in­ef­fi­ciency to the con­sumer and this shall not be al­lowed post March 2019. It is for the power util­i­ties to de­vise strat­egy to re­duce their losses, the con­sumer must not be bur­dened with high power tar­iffs ir­ra­tionally.”

Singh said that the Cen­tre will set a cap on the losses that power dis­tri­bu­tion com­pa­nies can passthrough on tar­iffs.

He said, “The States have ar­rived at con­sen­sus-based roadmap to bring down losses in dis­coms to be­low 15 per cent by then and any gra­tu­itous load shed­ding by them af­ter that dead­line would at­tract penal­ties.”

He fur­ther said that in­ef­fi­ciency in billing and non­meter­ing are ad­versely af­fect­ing the power sec­tor.

He said that there is a need to mod­ernise me­ter­ing sys­tem to cut power losses.
