The Madras High Court on Wednesday agreed for an early hearing of a case filed by DMK MLA J. Anbazhagan seeking a CBI probe into the gutkha scam.

The First Division Bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M. Sundar agreed to take up the case for hearing on Monday though it would have come up for hearing in the regular course only on September 8.

The permission was granted following a request made by petitioner’s counsel to advance the hearing in view of the chairman of the Committee of Privileges of the Assembly deciding to issue notices to 21 DMK MLAs for having displayed gutkha sachets in the House. When the Chief Justice wanted to know the connection between the notices and the case, counsel said the core issue was the same.
