Temperance work in Salem.

The Hindu - - OPED -

A HUNDRED YEARS AGO NOVEMBER 15, 1917 Some months ago two remarkable meetings of the weavers of Salem met in Ponnamapet and discussed the question of increasing liquor consumption in their community. They unanimously resolved to appeal to the Collector to reduce the number of toddy shops and remove them well outside the Municipal limits and that the community would co-operate with the authorities promptly to bring any illicit traffic that may arise to punishment. This was followed by a unanimous resolution of the Municipal Council to the same effect.
