Daswant gives police the slip in Mumbai
Murder accused fled while being handcuffed at Santa Cruz
Daswant, the 23-year-old accused of killing his mother and charged with sexual assault and murder, escaped from police custody in Mumbai on Thursday.
A top police officer told
The Hindu, “Our personnel produced him before a court in Mumbai. The court granted transit remand to them to take him to Chennai. After coming out of the court, they were at Santa Cruz when he escaped while his hands were being cuffed. Our personnel will soon nab him.”
Daswant was charged with the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl in in Mugaliwakkam in February. He kept the body of the girl, who was his neighbour, in his house for a day and later disposed it under a bridge, setting it afire a day later. Daswant was arrested and sent to the Central Prison, but came out on bail.
The police suspect he murdered his mother Sarala at their house. He escaped with gold jewellery. The police traced him to Mumbai. A top police officer said they would soon nab him and bring him to Chennai.
