Daswant gives police the slip in Mum­bai

Mur­der ac­cused fled while be­ing hand­cuffed at Santa Cruz

Daswant, the 23-year-old ac­cused of killing his mother and charged with sex­ual as­sault and mur­der, es­caped from police cus­tody in Mum­bai on Thurs­day.

A top police of­fi­cer told

The Hindu, “Our per­son­nel pro­duced him be­fore a court in Mum­bai. The court granted tran­sit re­mand to them to take him to Chennai. Af­ter com­ing out of the court, they were at Santa Cruz when he es­caped while his hands were be­ing cuffed. Our per­son­nel will soon nab him.”

Daswant was charged with the rape and mur­der of a seven-year-old girl in in Mu­gali­wakkam in Fe­bru­ary. He kept the body of the girl, who was his neigh­bour, in his house for a day and later dis­posed it un­der a bridge, set­ting it afire a day later. Daswant was ar­rested and sent to the Central Prison, but came out on bail.

The police sus­pect he mur­dered his mother Sar­ala at their house. He es­caped with gold jew­ellery. The police traced him to Mum­bai. A top police of­fi­cer said they would soon nab him and bring him to Chennai.
