The Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services has formed teams to inspect private hospitals across the State to check for fire safety arrangements, disaster management plans and ramps.

Director of Medical and Rural Health Services M.R. Enbasekaran said government hospitals had already been inspected and that the exercise for private hospitals in Chennai began on Tuesday. “We are looking at ramps, fire safety norms and about awareness with regard to disaster relief,” he said.

The inspection takes place in the aftermath of a PIL filed in 2015 by Jawaharlal Shanmugam with regard to ramps in hospitals for patient evacuation in the face of a disaster, and another miscellaneous petition he filed on the implementation building rules and regulations.

Six teams have been formed for Chennai district, said a senior DMS official.
