Surat victim not identified
Police contact Odisha police for information on victim
The Surat police have intensified efforts to identify the 11-year-old girl, who was raped and murdered by unidentified persons. The police have scanned photos of 8,000 missing girls and formed special probe teams.
The Surat Police on Monday intensified efforts to identify a girl aged about 11 whose mutilated body was found earlier this month.
A post-mortem examination had revealed that she had been brutally assaulted, raped and murdered.
The city police have formed special teams, which combed areas where migrant communities live on the outskirts of the city.
The police have also announced a reward of ₹20,000 to those who can help establish the identity of the victim or provide clues leading to the culprits. In Gandhinagar, Minister of State for Home Pradipsinh Jadeja told presspersons that the girl was probably from Odisha.
“We condemn the incident and have directed the local police to carry out strenuous investigations in the matter,” Mr. Jadeja said.
The Gujarat police have contacted the Odisha police to help with identifying the girl and tracking down her family. “As per the post-mortem examination, she was strangled to death and was tortured and raped for at least eight days,” Mr Jadeja said. “The city police have scanned photographs of 8,000 missing girls to identify the deceased.”
In a statement, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch), Surat, R.R. Sarvaiya, said the police had combed several areas, including where the body was found.
