Of­fer­ing to Bribe a Mag­is­trate.

Mr. Das Gupta, third Pres­i­dency Mag­is­trate [Calcutta], on Mon­day [April 15] de­liv­ered judg­ment in a case against Sri­lal Chamaria and Mim­raj Ba­nia, two rich and well-known Mar­waris who were charged with hav­ing at­tempted to of­fer a bribe of Rs. 5,000 to Mr. A.T. Mukherji, late Fifth Pres­i­dency Mag­is­trate of Calcutta through his bench clerk Mr. Karma Bhu­san Ban­ner­jee. The Mag­is­trate, in the course of a lengthy judg­ment, found the first ac­cused (Sri­lal) guilty under Sec­tions 161 and 109 read with 116 I.P.C. and sen­tenced him to three months’ rig­or­ous im­pris­on­ment and a fine of Rs. 1000 or in de­fault two months’ ad­di­tional im­pris­on­ment. The sec­ond ac­cused Mim­raj who was con­victed of aid­ing and abet­ting was sen­tenced to pay a fine of Rs. 1000. At the High Court on Mon­day af­ter­noon, Mr. Jack­son moved for bail on be­half of Sri­lal Chamaria be­fore the Chief Jus­tice and Mr. Jus­tice Beachcroft.
