Puzhal pris­on­ers who led a lux­u­ri­ous life shifted

Pris­on­ers who showed off their “lux­u­ri­ous life” in­side the Cen­tral prison were shifted to other prisons in the State.

Three con­victs — Mo­hammed Rafique, Mo­hamed Ibrahim alias Raja, Mo­hamed Rikas and two re­mand pris­on­ers, Mo­hamed Zahir, Raf­fiq alias Noorudeen, — were or­dered to be trans­ferred to Cen­tral prisons in Coim­bat­ore, Salem, Palayamkot­tai and Tiruchi, prison of­fi­cials said.

They were shifted out im­me­di­ately for ad­min­is­tra­tive and se­cu­rity rea­sons, the of­fi­cials said.

The trans­fer of the pris­on­ers comes af­ter pho­to­graphs were leaked out fol­low­ing seizure of mo­bile phones from them, which were handed over to lo­cal po­lice.

On Satur­day, C.Ve. Shanmugam, Min­is­ter for Law, Courts and Prisons, held a meet­ing with top of­fi­cials of Prison De­part­ment and re­viewed the se­cu­rity ar­range­ments.

“No ex­tra fa­cil­ity was pro­vided to the pris­on­ers. We pro­vided what­ever was stip­u­lated in the Tamil Nadu Prison Man­ual. ‘A’ class pris­on­ers are en­ti­tled to their own cloth­ing at their own cost dur­ing non-work­ing hours,” an of­fi­cial said.

The Prison De­part­ment is con­tem­plat­ing a strong ac­tion against the pris­on­ers who were found us­ing mo­bile phones and other contraband.
