Tense moments prevailed ahead of the Vinayaka idol immersion procession at Meiyapuram in Tirumayam police limits in Pudukottai district on Saturday after BJP national secretary H. Raja picked up a quarrel with the police objecting to certain restrictions.

A video clip showing Mr. Raja engaged in a heated argument with police officers and accusing them of being corrupt also went viral on online messaging platforms.

Police sources said that they had asked the Hindus not to go via a particular route given the communally sensitive nature of the village. But Mr. Raja strongly objected to the police preventing the Hindus from erecting a stage and taking out a procession on the specific route. When a police officer cited the High Court’s “instruction” (apparently given in connection with the immersion rally in the village), Mr. Raja vehemently rejected the contention.

Mr. Raja also accused the State police of being highly corrupt.
