A day after Peramalla Pranay Kumar, 23, belonging to a Scheduled Caste, was murdered here in a suspected case of ‘honour killing,’ his wife, Amrutha Varshini, said the plot was hatched by her father Tirunagaru Maruthi Rao and uncle Sravan.

“They are accused number one and two, and the attacker seen in the CCTV footage is a hired killer,” the police said.

“On many occasions, my father said I should forget him (Kumar), or else he’d kill him. My uncle also manhandled me,” said Ms. Varshini, who is still in hospital.

Ms. Varshini and Kumar eloped in January and married at the Arya Samaj Mandir in Hyderabad on January 30. They returned here in February and sought police protection. On Friday, they were leaving a hospital after Ms. Varshini’s pre-natal check-up when an unidentified man attacked Kumar from behind.

On Saturday, members of Mala Mahanadu and Ambedkar Jana Sangham observed Miryalaguda bandh, protesting the killing.

“I will not call this honour killing. It is a murder motivated by caste pride,” SC/ST Commission chairman Errolla Srinivas said.

Members of Revolutionary Writers’ Association said the police only gave free advice. “The police did not ensure the couple’s protection,” they said.
