Jalandhar bishop steps aside
Bishop Franco Mulakkal of the Roman Catholic Diocese in Jalandhar, who is facing allegations of sexual abuse of a nun, has handed over charge to another priest to administer the diocese in his absence.
A September 13 circular, issued by the Bishop, said Father Mathew Kokkandam would be the administrator of the Jalandhar diocese in his absence.
The circular states, “...as there are several contradictions in the evidences collected against me as per the report of the police, it is reported that I am likely to be called for further clarifications by the investigating officer in Kerala. In my absence, Msgr. Mathew Kokkandam will administer the diocese as is the normal practice.” Franco Mulakkal has also appointed Father Joseph Thekkumkattil as Dean of Tanda Deanery and Father Subin Thekkadathu as Parochial Vicar, St Mary’s Church, Tanda.
The police team probing the case has summoned Franco Mulakkal to Kerala for interrogation on September 19.
