Ja­land­har bishop steps aside

Bishop Franco Mu­lakkal of the Ro­man Catholic Dio­cese in Ja­land­har, who is fac­ing al­le­ga­tions of sex­ual abuse of a nun, has handed over charge to an­other priest to ad­min­is­ter the dio­cese in his ab­sence.

A Septem­ber 13 cir­cu­lar, is­sued by the Bishop, said Fa­ther Mathew Kokkan­dam would be the ad­min­is­tra­tor of the Ja­land­har dio­cese in his ab­sence.

The cir­cu­lar states, “...as there are sev­eral con­tra­dic­tions in the ev­i­dences col­lected against me as per the re­port of the po­lice, it is re­ported that I am likely to be called for fur­ther clar­i­fi­ca­tions by the in­ves­ti­gat­ing of­fi­cer in Ker­ala. In my ab­sence, Msgr. Mathew Kokkan­dam will ad­min­is­ter the dio­cese as is the nor­mal prac­tice.” Franco Mu­lakkal has also ap­pointed Fa­ther Joseph Thekkumkat­til as Dean of Tanda Dean­ery and Fa­ther Su­bin Thekka­dathu as Parochial Vicar, St Mary’s Church, Tanda.

The po­lice team prob­ing the case has sum­moned Franco Mu­lakkal to Ker­ala for in­ter­ro­ga­tion on Septem­ber 19.
