Centre will soon arrest rising fuel prices: Shah

Admits high petrol and diesel prices are worrying the BJP

The Hindu - - NEWS - Press Trust of India

Blaming international developments for the rising petrol and diesel prices and dipping rupee value, BJP president Amit Shah on Saturday said the Centre would come out with a solution soon.

“The increasing petrol and diesel prices, and sliding rupee against the dollar, are a cause of concern for both the BJP and the government,” Mr. Shah told presspersons here.

Global developments

“It [the rising fuel cost] was due to some developments that took place globally — the trade war between the U.S. and China, and issues between the U.S. and oil producing countries. Because of these global reasons, these developments are taking place,” he said.

“We are also concerned about this. Solution is also being found out. Within a short time, the government will take a stand on these issues,” he said. Mr. Shah said the impact on the rupee was “far less” compared with other currencies.

Opposition parties led by the Congress had on September 10 called for a nationwide shutdown to protest the escalating prices of fuel and other essential items.

‘No hand in Naidu issue’

Replying to a query on the arrest warrant issued by the Dharmabad court in Maharashtra against Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and some of his party functionaries, Mr. Shah said the BJP had nothing to do with it.

The warrant was issued in a case related to an agitation that Mr. Naidu undertook, when in the Opposition in united Andhra Pradesh, over Maharashtra’s Babli barrage project on Godavari river in 2010.

He said there were Congress governments in both Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra during 2010 when the case was taken up by the court. “Now, Chandrababu is trying to gain sympathy out of the issue,” Mr. Shah said.

The BJP chief said the case was filed in 2010 and the police had filed a chargesheet in 2013. Mr. Naidu had not responded even after several summons were issued by the court against him, Mr. Shah alleged.
