Five per cent GST from today on food served in hotels Those violating order will face strict action, warns Minister Bapat
EATING out in hotels will become cheaper from Wednesday as the GST rate on food has been kept at 5 per cent.
“It has become mandatory for hotels to charge new rates from November 15. Those violating the order will face action,” warned Civil Supplies Minister Girish Bapat here on Tuesday.
Bapat said, as per new GST slab fixed by the Centre, hotels would charge GST at five per cent. Before GST, rates were inclusive of VAT. After GST, hotels should have removed VAT. However, many hotels continued to charge VAT plus GST. However, they will have to reprint rate card minus VAT. Hand-written rates will not be allowed, Bapat clarified.
Bapat has asked hotels to display their GST number prominently on the front of the hotel.
“Those not reducing rates of food items will face strict action”, Bapat warned.
Bapat has also appealed to the people to lodge their complaint against hotels not reducing rates on toll-free number 1800225900.
Bapat also clarified that shopkeepers can’t charge more than the MRP printed on packages of goods sold.
