Pres­i­dent, V-P, PM pay trib­utes to Pan­dit Nehru on birth an­niver­sary

PRES­I­DENT Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Min­is­ter Naren­dra Modi led the coun­try in pay­ing rich trib­utes to In­dia’s first Prime Min­is­ter Jawa­har­lal Nehru on his 128th birth an­niver­sary on Tues­day. Pres­i­dent Kovind, Vice Pres­i­dent M Venka­iah Naidu, Prime Min­is­ter Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Su­mi­tra Ma­ha­jan re­mem­bered Pan­dit Nehru and paid homage to him.

“On his 128th birth an­niver­sary, my homage to Shri Jawa­har­lal Nehru, our first Prime Min­is­ter,” Kovind said on Twit­ter. “Wish the na­tion on the oc­ca­sion of birth an­niver­sary of first Prime Min­is­ter of In­dia, Pan­dit Jawa­har­lal Nehru, to­day,” Naidu tweeted. Modi, who is in Manila to at­tend the In­di­aASEAN sum­mit, also paid trib­utes to Nehru. “Trib­utes to Pan­dit Jawa­har­lal Nehru on his birth an­niver­sary,” he wrote on Twit­ter.

For­mer Pres­i­dent Pranab Mukher­jee and for­mer Prime

Min­is­ter Man­mo­han Singh paid flo­ral trib­utes at Nehru’s memo­rial at Shanti Van early Tues­day morn­ing. A host of other Con­gresslead­ers,in­clud­ing­former Delhi Chief Min­is­ter Sheila Dik­shit and the State Congress chief Ajay Maken, were also present.

At an­other func­tion in the cen­tral hall of Par­lia­ment, Speaker Su­mi­tra Ma­ha­jan led Par­lia­men­tar­i­ans in pay­ing flo­ral trib­utes at the por­trait of Pan­dit Nehru. Home Min­is­ter Ra­j­nath Singh, Fi­nance Min­is­ter Arun Jait­ley, Par­lia­men­tary Af­fairs Min­is­ter Ananth Ku­mar, Deputy Speaker M Tham­bidu­rai, Min­is­ter of State for Par­lia­men­tary Af­fairs and Statis­tics and Pro­gramme Im­ple­men­ta­tionVi­jayGoel,for­mer deputy Prime Min­is­ter and Chair­per­son, Ethics Com­mit­tee L K Ad­vani, Sit­ting and for­mer MPs and dig­ni­taries paid trib­utes to Pan­dit to Nehru.

Sec­re­taries-Gen­eral of Lok Sabha and Ra­jya Sabha Anoop Mishra and Desh Deepak Verma re­spec­tively, and se­nior of­fi­cers of Lok Sabha Sec­re­tar­iat also paid flo­ral trib­utes to In­dia’s first Prime Min­is­ter.
