Tragedy averted as forces defuse IED planted on road

SE­CU­RITY forces averted a ma­jor tragedy when they de­tected and de­fused a pow­er­ful Im­pro­vised Ex­plo­sive De­vice (IED) planted by mil­i­tants in the city out­skirts on Sri­na­gar-Bara­mulla road on Satur­day, when sep­a­ratists had called for a gen­eral strike against the killing of civil­ians in the val­ley. Traf­fic on the Sri­na­gar to North Kash­mir high­way has been now been re­stored af­ter re­main­ing sus­pended for sev­eral hours as a pre­cau­tion­ary mea­sure fol­low­ing de­tec­tion of IED.

Of­fi­cial sources, told UNI that a Road Open­ing Party (ROP) of se­cu­rity forces no­ticed an IED planted by mil­i­tants on main road in the city out­skirts. The area was im­me­di­ately sealed and traf­fic sus­pended as a pre­cau­tion­ary mea­sure. Snif­fer dogs were also pressed into ser­vice. Since, it was early in the morn­ing be­sides strike called by sep­a­ratists, not much traf­fic was on the road, they said adding traf­fic has been di­verted through Zainakote. The BDS de­fused the IED and traf­fic on Sri­na­gar-Bara­mulla high­way has been re­stored now.

How­ever, ad­di­tional se­cu­rity forces and State po­lice per­son­nel re­mained de­ployed on the high­way to pre­vent any stone pelt­ing in view of the strike call, they said. Lo­cal res­i­dents told UNI over phone that there was a loud blast, sound of which was heard in the area when BDS de­fused the IED.
