It gives me im­mense plea­sure to bring you the first is­sue of The Lux­ury Col­lec­tion in 2017. The tran­si­tion to a new year al­ways raises hope and ex­pec­ta­tion, of luck turn­ing, for­tune shin­ing and life sparkling all round.

It is, there­fore, metaphor­i­cally apt that this year-com­menc­ing is­sue is themed on shines and sparkles – I am talk­ing about fine jew­ellery, with a spe­cific fo­cus on the queen of jewels, the di­a­mond.

Since time im­memo­rial, the di­a­mond has cap­tured the imag­i­na­tion of mankind. It has al­ways sym­bol­ized the most re­fined and rar­efied form of lux­ury, and has been cov­eted with pas­sion. Its in­ner en­ergy has been vested with a mys­ti­cal power that has gained much in the telling over the ages.

De Beers, with their im­mor­tal slo­gan, ‘A Di­a­mond is For­ever’ can be cred­ited with start­ing the trend of the di­a­mond en­gage­ment ring. Their iconic cam­paign that ran in the 1940s suc­cess­fully cre­ated an aura around the di­a­mond, turn­ing its chem­i­cal re­silience into a meta­phys­i­cal sym­bol for love that lasts for­ever. An aura that per­sists till to­day and, if any­thing, has only grown stronger with the time. In­deed, no man to­day can even imagine go­ing down on bended knee with­out a soli­taire to woo his lady love!

In this is­sue, we take a look at some of the most fa­mous jew­ellery in his­tory, in­clud­ing some of the most cel­e­brated di­a­monds. It is a fas­ci­nat­ing jour­ney back in time that we have put to­gether for you, in­clud­ing a look into the in­dul­gences of our very own pre-in­de­pen­dence Ma­hara­jahs and Ma­ha­ra­nis. Along­side we also pro­vide you with a ring­side view of some of the world’s most fa­mous jew­ellery brands and shop­ping dis­tricts. I am sure you will have an en­joy­able time ex­plor­ing this lux­u­ri­ous world of fine jew­ellery.

Along­side, in­ter alia, we walk you through Art Basel in Mi­ami, the fes­ti­val that takes art to the beaches, which con­cluded in De­cem­ber. And we also dwell upon mankind’s fas­ci­na­tion with speed by ex­plor­ing the Blood­hound project, which aims to build the first mo­tor car to cross the 1000 mph bar­rier. An ex­cit­ing tryst with des­tiny that we hope will be crowned with success in the New Year.
