Prestige The Man Store
If it’s in season, it’s in fashion. Perhaps the pithiest way to describe how the changing climatic conditions influence the clothes you are recommended to wear. Yes indeed, every aspect of your attire – colour, cut, design – everything is conceived of to be in tune with the season, and the most definitive factor of them all is the fabric. That is why, as we head into autumn and prepare for the winter months that lie beyond, we begin to shift our focus from the soft, light and airy cottons to the robust wool blends and sophisticated pure wools.
This year the Autumn/winter look is a decidedly sporty one, with woollen yarns being woven into the fabric to make for a robust, red-blooded English country look.
What is it about wool that makes it the designer’s favourite fabric? Its insulating properties for one, which make it perfect for winter clothing. Indeed, winter suiting is where it comes truly into its own and stamps its authority as the finest of menswear luxury fabrics. But is keeping one warm all there is to wool? Not at all. There are several reasons why designers love wool. It is resilient and retains its form, it is full bodied and falls smoothly, and it responds to the designer’s will like a well trained performing seal. The designer knows that he can get wool to behave exactly as he wants it to on the body to fashion a high fidelity sartorial expression of his creative genius. Why would he use any other fabric then? This season, apart from wool, there is also a move towards mixing other yarns, especially the more fancy ones such as such as mouliné, bouclé, slub and knop threads. We also see a distinct trend towards using special finishes and design features such as micro patterns, weave textures, tiny jacquards, irregular extra threads, and dobby motifs.
Corduroy, that straight ribbed cousin of English twill, is also making a big comeback this season. A slim silhouetted corduroy suit is most recommended perhaps in subtle olive green or navy blue. Corduroy trousers paired with a leather jacket will make for a cool throwback to the rock concerts of the seventies. The colour palette this Fall is all about mixing shades, perhaps an unconscious nod to the variegated patterns of the autumn leaves. Mossy greens, oranges, browns, deeper reds and blues…go ahead and mix and match as the mood dictates.
