Next we decided to pay a call on the Lord of the Arctic, the giant Polar Bear, in its domain Svalbard, an archipelago located halfway between the North Pole and the Norwegian mainland. These days it is not easy to spot this magnificent snowy white creature, who once roamed the region in millions. Today, the global population of polar bears is estimated at around twenty five thousand. We were not fortunate enough to see one, but indulged in some dog sledding that took us through a stunning landscape of glaciers, valleys and mountains. Incidentally, we were also awed to learn that Svalbard also had the Northernmost permanent human settlement in the world, the research station of Ny-ålesund.
