Lankan unions call rail­way strike, thou­sands stranded

Thou­sands of com­muters were left stranded in Sri Lanka as rail­way unions launched an in­def­i­nite strike on Wed­nes­day evening, at a peak rush hour, lead­ing to the can­cel­la­tion of all trains through­out the na­tion. The unions have al­leged that a group of trainee train driv­ers had been ap­pointed, breach­ing nor­mal re­cruit­ment pro­ce­dures.
