Chennai: Urad dal (ulutham paruppu) will no longer be available in ration shops. Food Minister R Kamaraj on Tuesday said the government has stopped purchasing the commodity ‘to avoid inconsistency.’ According to Kamaraj, the government had been procuring 13,000 tonnes of toor dal (thuvaram paruppu), Canadian yellow lentils or Masoor dal and 7,000 tonnes of Urad dal since 2008. It will now shift to procuring 21,000 tonnes of toor dal/ Canadian lentils/Masoor dal. “There is inconsistency and confusion when one beneficiary gets one dal and the next, another. To avoid this, we have decided to do away with Urad dal,” Kamaraj said. The Minister also said 1.71 crores of the 1.93 crore family cards have been converted to smart cards. ENS
