E-way traffic hit as tanker catches fire
Traffic came to a standstill for nearly an hour on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway after a tanker caught fire near Khopoli on Saturday. No one was injured.
The tanker, carrying flammable liquid, was headed to Pune. The fire started at 2am due to a short-circuit in the engine, said a Highway Safety Patrol officer. The tanker driver and cleaner stopped the vehicle as soon as they smelt fumes. The fire moved towards the fuel tank and within minutes, the tanker was gutted.
Fire tenders from Khopoli, Lonavla and nearby areas were rushed to the spot to contain the fire that blazed for 30 minutes. Vehicles heading towards Pune were diverted to the old highway.
