E-way traf­fic hit as tanker catches fire

Traf­fic came to a stand­still for nearly an hour on the Mum­bai-Pune Ex­press­way af­ter a tanker caught fire near Khopoli on Satur­day. No one was in­jured.

The tanker, car­ry­ing flammable liq­uid, was headed to Pune. The fire started at 2am due to a short-cir­cuit in the en­gine, said a High­way Safety Pa­trol of­fi­cer. The tanker driver and cleaner stopped the ve­hi­cle as soon as they smelt fumes. The fire moved to­wards the fuel tank and within min­utes, the tanker was gut­ted.

Fire ten­ders from Khopoli, Lon­avla and nearby ar­eas were rushed to the spot to con­tain the fire that blazed for 30 min­utes. Vehicles head­ing to­wards Pune were di­verted to the old high­way.
