2nd Metro tun­nel driller to be used in Oct in SoBo

Mum­bai: Mum­bai Metro Rail Cor­po­ra­tion (MMRC) has re­ceived the sec­ond tun­nel­bor­ing ma­chine (TBM) for con­struc­tion of Co­labaBan­dra- SEEPZ cor­ri­dor, Metro Line III.

Weigh­ing 817 tonnes with a di­am­e­ter of 6.68 me­tres, the ma­chine will be low­ered in mid-Oc­to­ber at Azad Maidan.

An MMRC spokesper­son said, “Pro­cured from Aus­tralian ma­jor Ter­rat­ech Pri­vate Lim­ited, from its man­u­fac­tur­ing fa­cil­ity in Guangzhou, China, the TBM will be low­ered us­ing cranes.”

The highly-mech­a­nized Hard Rock Type de­vice will be used to con­struct tun­nels with cir­cu­lar cross sec­tion. Dif­fer­ent ma­chine parts will be as­sem­bled in 45 days.

MMRC’s man­ag­ing di­rec­tor Ash­wini Bhide said, “This TBM will al­low soft, wet, hard or un­sta­ble ground to be tun­nelled with speed and safe con­struc­tion.”

The ma­chine is first of two such that will be used to con­struct a 4-km-long tun­nel between CST and Mum­bai Cen­tral sta­tions that will cross or in­clude Kal­badevi,Gir­gaum and Grant Road .

The first ma­chine, which ar­rived on Septem­ber 4, will be launched in Dhar­avi this month and the bor­ing work for the con­struc­tion of 6.08km twin tun­nels from Sid­dhiv­inayak to Dhar­avi will be­gin in Oc­to­ber.
