2nd Metro tunnel driller to be used in Oct in SoBo
Mumbai: Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has received the second tunnelboring machine (TBM) for construction of ColabaBandra- SEEPZ corridor, Metro Line III.
Weighing 817 tonnes with a diameter of 6.68 metres, the machine will be lowered in mid-October at Azad Maidan.
An MMRC spokesperson said, “Procured from Australian major Terratech Private Limited, from its manufacturing facility in Guangzhou, China, the TBM will be lowered using cranes.”
The highly-mechanized Hard Rock Type device will be used to construct tunnels with circular cross section. Different machine parts will be assembled in 45 days.
MMRC’s managing director Ashwini Bhide said, “This TBM will allow soft, wet, hard or unstable ground to be tunnelled with speed and safe construction.”
The machine is first of two such that will be used to construct a 4-km-long tunnel between CST and Mumbai Central stations that will cross or include Kalbadevi,Girgaum and Grant Road .
The first machine, which arrived on September 4, will be launched in Dharavi this month and the boring work for the construction of 6.08km twin tunnels from Siddhivinayak to Dharavi will begin in October.
The machine will be used to dig the CST-Mumbai Central tunnel
