Panaji: Goa’s opposition leader and Congress MLA Chandrakant Kavlekar and wife Savitri were booked by the anti-corruption branch (ACB) on Saturday in a Rs 4.8-crore disproportionate assets case. The ACB also raided Kavlekar’s residence and party office at Quepem and his commercial establishment in Margao, and seized documents for examination.

ACB superintendent of police Bosco George said if Kavlekar was unable to provide satisfactory answers, they would consider arresting him and subjecting him to custodial interrogation. The FIR against Kavlekar has been registered under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, while his wife, who is a director in his companies, has been booked under provisions of the IPC. She will also be summoned for questioning. In 2013, the ACB had received information that Kavlekar, the then chairman of the Goa Industrial Development Corporation, had acquired 14 properties in Kerala worth crores and had failed to disclose it before the Lokayukta.

A team of ACB officers will travel to Kerala to record the statements of individuals who had sold property to Kavlekar.
