Chain-snatcher held with tea vendor’s help

The Times of India (Mumbai edition) - - TIMES CITY -

Mumbai: A tip-off from a tea vendor helped the railway police (GRP) nab a chain-snatcher who alleged targeted commuters on the Harbour line and on trains between Mumbai and Konkan. With the arrest of Sindhudurg resident, Umesh Kamble (25), the Panvel GRP has solved five offences and recovered gold jewellery worth Rs 3 lakh.

Kamble used to scout for targets, board the train with them and snatch their jewellery just as the train would start moving and escape.

“We checked the CCTV footage at various stations and identified Kamble. His pictures were then shown to frequent commuters and vendors, one of whom identified Kamble,” said aGRP official.

On October 9, the GRP laid a trap at Panvel station on specific information that he was to board the Netravati Express. He was taken into custody and later produced before a court.
