2 broth­ers die on tracks af­ter vis­it­ing ‘crit­i­cal’ un­cle in hosp

Kalyan: Two broth­ers who were re­turn­ing home af­ter vis­it­ing an un­cle who has been ad­mit­ted to hos­pi­tal in a crit­i­cal con­di­tion died af­ter they were run over by a lo­cal train at Kopar railway sta­tion on Thurs­day night. The de­ceased — Pan­vel res­i­dent Pramod Lokhande (39) and his brother Pune res­i­dent Sachin(41) — were cross­ing the tracks, the railway po­lice said.

As word of the ac­ci­dent spread, lo­cals staged an im­promptu protest against the railway au­thor­i­ties, de­mand­ing a foot over-bridge across the tracks at the sta­tion.

The el­der brother, San­jay, said in his po­lice state­ment that Pramod and Sachin had gone to visit the un­cle who has been put on a ven­ti­la­tor at the hos­pi­tal in Va­sai.

Railway po­lice of­fi­cials said that the two broth­ers had taken a lo­cal train from Va­sai to Kopar. They were cross­ing the track when a speed­ing lo­cal tra- in knocked them down around 8.30 pm.

The railway po­lice said that on re­ceiv­ing in­for­ma­tion about the ac­ci­dent, the broth­ers were rushed to Shas­tri Na­gar Hos­pi­tal which is run by Kalyan Dom­bivli Mu­nic­i­pal Cor­po­ra­tion where doc­tors de­clared both the broth­ers as be­ing ‘brought dead’.

Se­nior in­spec­tor of Gov­ern­ment Railway Po­lice, G C Hire­math,said that an ac­ci­den­tal death re­port has been filed in the case and fur­ther in­ves­ti­ga­tion is go­ing on.

While the Lokhande fam­ily orig­i­nally hails from Rat­na­giri, Pramod lived with his fam­ily in Pan­vel where he worked for a pri­vate com­pany while Sachin’s fam­ily is set­tled in Pune.
