BEST budget proposes 5 dedicated bus corridors
Mumbai: In an attempt to salvage the “failed” dedicated bus lanes experiment, the BEST budget for 2018-19 has proposed five new corridors. One of them would include extending the existing lane from Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) till Kurla, Sion and Bandra stations.
Sources said there were several complaints of “indiscipline” along the BKC corridor, with drivers not using the dedicated bus lane in afternoons. The dedicated lane at BKC is temporarily shut now and there are plans to extend the corridor till Bandra, Kurla and Sion stations before relaunching it shortly, said sources. A provision for extending the corridor and creating a dedicated bus lane from Bandra station till Kurla and Sion has already been made in the BEST budget, which will come up for discussion at the next committee meeting.
The budget copy states, “The feasibility study on the five proposed corridors is being conducted by MMRDA. The corridors are Vasantrao Naik (Eastern Express) Highway from Sion to Thane; Western Express Highway from Kala Nagar to Andheri; the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road from Gandhi Nagar to Powai; Jijamata Bhosale Marg (Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road) and the
