BEST bud­get pro­poses 5 ded­i­cated bus cor­ri­dors

Mum­bai: In an at­tempt to sal­vage the “failed” ded­i­cated bus lanes ex­per­i­ment, the BEST bud­get for 2018-19 has pro­posed five new cor­ri­dors. One of them would in­clude ex­tend­ing the ex­ist­ing lane from Ban­dra-Kurla Com­plex (BKC) till Kurla, Sion and Ban­dra sta­tions.

Sources said there were sev­eral com­plaints of “in­dis­ci­pline” along the BKC cor­ri­dor, with driv­ers not us­ing the ded­i­cated bus lane in af­ter­noons. The ded­i­cated lane at BKC is tem­po­rar­ily shut now and there are plans to ex­tend the cor­ri­dor till Ban­dra, Kurla and Sion sta­tions be­fore re­launch­ing it shortly, said sources. A pro­vi­sion for ex­tend­ing the cor­ri­dor and cre­at­ing a ded­i­cated bus lane from Ban­dra sta­tion till Kurla and Sion has al­ready been made in the BEST bud­get, which will come up for dis­cus­sion at the next com­mit­tee meet­ing.

The bud­get copy states, “The fea­si­bil­ity study on the five pro­posed cor­ri­dors is be­ing con­ducted by MMRDA. The cor­ri­dors are Vas­antrao Naik (East­ern Ex­press) High­way from Sion to Thane; Western Ex­press High­way from Kala Na­gar to And­heri; the Jo­gesh­wari-Vikhroli Link Road from Gandhi Na­gar to Powai; Ji­ja­mata Bhos­ale Marg (Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road) and the
