10-year-old boy kidnapped from Powai, killed by distant relative
Accused Took Boy Out To Play, Watch Movie Before Murder
Mumbai: A 10-year-old boy from Powai was kidnapped and killed by a distant relative on Sunday. But strangely, the accused claimed he thought of demanding Rs 2.5 lakh from the victim Ritesh Singh’s father, but the boy was killed without any ransom demand being made. The accused, Amar Singh (20), claimed he got scared and killed the boy after the victim’s father called to ask about his son’s whereabouts.
The Class III student went missing after he stepped out of his Powai residence in Tunga village on Sunday, with Amar, at around 2pm. The victim’s father Babloo (37), an electrician, said Amar was a distant relative who frequently visited the family in Powai. “Amar is closely known to me and hails from the same village in UP. He never even made a ransom call before killing my son. He didn’t give me a chance to save my son,” Babloo said.
He said Amar came to their house on Sunday afternoon and took Ritesh to play in the neighbourhood. The family started searching for Ritesh only after 5pm. “At around 7.30pm I called Amar on his mobile and asked about my son’s well being. I think it is after my call he killed my son,” Babloo said. Amar told Babloo he had left the boy near Valmiki Temple in Powai in the afternoon and had reached Bhayander.
Police said the victim once got suspicious and tried to run away, but Amar took him into confidence and said he wanted to show him a movie and took him to Bhayander where they watched a film. Later he took the boy to a friend Lalu Singh’s (21) fabrication shop, nearby. “Minutes after the victim’s father’s call, Amar and Lalu killed the boy in the fabrication shop,” Powai police said. They smashed his face with a boulder after the mur- der and dumped the body at a secluded place in Bhayander (East).
On Monday morning, Amar and Lalu initially claimed they are unaware about the boy’s whereabouts and set out to search for the boy with the family. “Amar earlier worked in the same fabrication shop where he killed the boy. He was tracked down after police went through the call data record of the accused,” said a police officer.
The duo has been booked under the Indian Penal Code sections 34 (common intention), 302 (murder), 363 (kidnap) and 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder). They have been remanded to police custody for seven days.
Police are still investigating the motive behind the crime. Amar has claimed he wanted to demand a ransom but panicked, and also stated his father had a longstanding quarrel with Ritesh’s father, but police were yet to believe any of the claims.
