Chennai techie set ablaze by stalker, dies
Chennai: A 23-year-old stalker burned his former classmate to death in her Adambakkam apartment on Monday night after she refused to marry him, police said. Her mother and sister who tried to overpower the man suffered burns and are battling for life at Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital.
Police later the arrested the accused, M Aakash of Kamarajapuram in Velachery, and a court sent him to jail.
Akash, who studied engineering with S Indhuja, 22, had been stalking her for more than a month after she turned down his overtures and told him her family was seeking a wedding proposal. Aakash, who worked as a marketing executive for four months, is now jobless, while Indhuja was a trainee at an IT firm on Old Mahaballipuram Road. On Monday, Aakash went to her house in Saraswathy Nagar at 8.45pm. Indhuja and her family were initially reluctant to open the door, but let him in after he claimed he only wanted to speak to her for a few minutes. Her younger brother was on the terrace. Indhuja’s father Shanmugam is in Canada.
“An argument broke out after Indhuja told him she would only marry a groom chosen by her parents,” said a police officer. Aakash then took a can of petrol which he had kept outside and tried to pour it on her. When Indhuja’s mother Renuka and sister Nivedha tried to stop him, they were also doused in petrol. “Scared, Indhuja then ran into her bedroom, when he lit a lighter and threw it on her,” the officer said. Renuka and Nivedha sustained burns when they held her and tried to put out the fire.
