WR de­silts 40 cul­verts, says its rain-ready

Mum­bai: West­ern Rail­way said it is geared to tackle emer­gen­cies due to heavy rain as it has de­silted around 40 cul­verts along its sub­ur­ban cor­ri­dor, be­sides lift­ing the level of tracks and in­stalling pumps.

WR chief PRO Ravin­der Bhakar said, “We will pay more at­ten­tion to flood-prone sec­tions, in­clud­ing Grant Road, El­phin­stone Road, Dadar, Matunga Road-Mahim yard, Ban­dra-Khar, And­heri-Jo­gesh­wari and Nalla Sopara-Vi­rar.”

WR has com­pleted the first round of de­silt­ing in all 40 cul­verts and work on the re­main­ing three will be done by May 25. Sub­se­quent de­silt­ing will be com­pleted after a joint in­spec­tion of the first round, he added.

He said lift­ing of tracks in low-ly­ing ar­eas had been com­pleted in Mahim yard on the Har­bour line and be­tween Ban­draKhar down slow line.

WR has placed 100 pumps at Marine Lines, Mum­bai Cen­tral, Dadar, Matunga Road, Mahim, Ban­dra, And­heri, Borivli, Nalla Sopara and Vi­rar.

Cut­ting and trim­ming of vul­ner­a­ble trees near tracks will also be done.
