Mumbai: The state is mulling a public-private partnership policy under which it plans to acquire land in the Mumbai Metropolitan region and develop low-cost homes to give further impetus to its affordable housing scheme.

The policy is likely to be presented to the cabinet in a month, state housing minister Prakash Mehta said on the sidelines of an event on Thursday.

“There are large land parcels like 100-500 acres in the region where owners want to develop them but don’t have finances... Now, under the new policy, we are proposing that we will acquire these land parcels through Mhada and develop affordable homes and compensate land owners,” Mehta said.
