12-hr hostage crisis: Gunman slashes model, stabs MP cop

Bhopal: “Ma, Rohit has got into the house!” This scream from a terrified MTech graduate and aspiring model early Saturday morning kicked off what went on to be a 12-hour hostage drama that Bhopal’s residents had only seen on TV.

Acrazed youth, armed with a desi pistol, knife and a pair of scissors, allegedly stabbed the girl and then locked the two of them in her bedroom. As she lay bleeding for hours, Rohit Singh aka Regal engaged in video chats with reporters and police, went live on Facebook with grisly images of the injured girl, demanding that they be “shared maximum”, and had police dancing to his tunes. He also inflicted injuries on a cop who tried to push his way into the house.

Like a script from Bollywood, the industry he claims to work for, Rohit dragged the drama for as long as he wanted before turning himself in a little after 7pm. All day, he had been gesturing to mediapersons and cops indicating that he would end it at 7pm.

The girl was rescued and hospitalised and is said to be stable. In her statement to police, she said Rohit had threatened her at gunpoint and with a knife. “I had no option but to agree to marry him. But I don’t want to,” she said. But SP R K Lodha claimed, “They are in love and want to marry. There is nothing wrong. But the process he used is wrong.”
